Tour Introduction

The tour starts with transfer from your accommodation to the port of Split, and a 50-minute ferry ride to the island of Brač. From Supetar, the road takes us to the village called Škrip for a visit to a couple of unique museums: the Museum of the Island of Brač and the nearby Olive Oil Museum, with each one bringing history to life in its own way.

Historically speaking, the island is famous for its 2 millennia long stone production. It is a well-known fact that the stone for the construction of Diocletian’s Palace was quarried here.

The specificity of the island of Brač, apart from its stony surface, is also in its altitude, making it the tallest Croatian island. In addition, the long history of Brač has always been marked by the cultivation of grapevine, especially the plavac mali variety.

The trip continues upwards to the tip of the island, to St. Vid`s Mountain – the island’s highest peak. It offers the view of stunning landscapes on the mainland and surrounding islands, in particular the island of Hvar with its World Heritage Stari Grad Plain, which is actually a cultural landscape that has remained intact since the times of Ionian Greek colonisation back in the 4th century BC.

Our next stop is just a 10-minute descend away; an abandoned shepherds` village, a place where we shall relax and enjoy ourselves while having an authentic meal prepared under a metal lid, locally called the peka.

After the village in the hills, our journey will take us down to the sea, to the town of Bol. In tourist terms, the island of Brač is best known for its Zlatni rat (Golden Horn) beach in Bol, which is featured in the ‘Ten most beautiful beaches in the world’ list. Covered with fine pebbles, it has a triangular shape with a peak protruding out in the sea, constantly changing direction depending on the current. Due to favourable winds, Bol’s beach is also quite popular among windsurfers.

However, we are in Bol for an entirely different reason: to visit a wine cellar which produces some superb wines. Founded on May 15, 1901, this cellar was the first Dalmatian winemaking cooperative. The building was completed in 1903, housing the winemaking cooperative’s konoba (cellar) on the ground floor, and a school, teacher’s apartment and municipal office on the first floor. Today, this building is one of the most modern and best-equipped wine cellars in Croatia. Apart from the premises for grape processing and aging of wine furnished with the state-ot-the-art equipment, the cellar also contains a superbly designed wine tasting and sales area.
